2011 Menís DIBF World Deaf Basketball Championship
Athlete Selection Criteria

Overview:
There will be another international basketball competition during the 2011 Menís DIBF World Deaf Basketball Championship organized by DIBF (Deaf International Basketball Federation). The event will be held in Palermo, Italy on September 23 to October 1, 2011.

The initial selection process for elite basketball athletes for the 2011 Menís USA Basketball Team from the pool of applicants will be conducted by the selection committee and the head coach. The selection committee and USADB International Coordinator will coordinate the selection process. Athletes will be identified and/or selected by the Selection Committee and the head coach based on their previous outstanding performances and/or recognition at a) national tournaments; b) Deaflympics, c) Pan Am Games, d) other elite level competition and e) invitational or development training camps. Additional athletes may be identified by news reports, or who have come to the Committeeís attention through reports from knowledgeable individuals. These selected athletes will be required to attend the first qualifying event. The qualifying event will be at Indiana School for the Deaf from July 29-31, 2010. The second qualifying and final qualifying event may be needed upon the decision of the National Team Head Coach. Each Applicant is required to fill out the application from the link on USADB website to be considered for the selection. The exact amount needed to fundraise will be announced on September 1, 2010.

Date:
The final selection of athletes for the 2011 Menís USA Basketball Team will be announced via USADB website by August 15, 2010. The selected 24 athletes will be expected to attend a tryout on July 29-31, 2010. The USADB Executive Board will make announcement of the team roster immediately upon approval of selection.

Announcement:
Announcement for the 2011 Menís USA Basketball Team will be posted immediately on the USADB website and through outreach efforts with athletes in the regional/national network of male elite athletes, as well as through contact with former USA Team athletes. NOTE: There may be another Qualifying Trial for the 2011 Menís USA Basketball Team.

Eligibility:
To be eligible for selection, an athlete must be a U.S. citizen who is eligible to represent the USA, and a member in good standing of USADB and USADSF. Athletes must have a hearing loss of 55 db or greater in the better ear in order to participate in international events, sanctioned by International Committee for Sports of the Deaf (ICSD, aka CISS and DEAFLYMPICS).


Additional requirement for selection:
1. Sign and abide by the USADSF Code of Conduct and any other applicable forms required by the USADSF;
2. Submit himself/herself without reservations to all doping control policies of USADSF and ICSD;
3. Commit to maintaining a coach-mandated training program from the time of selection until the end of the specified international competition;
4. Maintain contact with the USA Team coaches and keep them informed about their training progress;
5. Exhibit good sportsmanship, on and off court behavior and good character.
6. Attend all mandated training camps;
7. Shall perform fundraising activities for the USA Team as required by USADSF and USADB;
8. Member of USADSF and USADB in good standing.
9. Shall pay $5 USADSF membership fee for the year of 2010-2011. A check should be made payable to USADSF and sent to USADSF at:

10. Shall send application to the USADSF Home Office along with the $5 USADSF membership fee.
11. Complete the US Team application packet and pay a non-refundable US Team application fee of $25.00 with 30 days of selection.

Selection Procedure:
The 2011 Menís USA Basketball Team will initially consist of 24 male athletes to attend the first Qualifying event. The USA Head Coach may decide whether the 2nd qualifying event may be necessary. If 2nd qualifying event wonít be necessary, the USA Head Coach will then select 12 athletes and 3 alternates from the qualifying event. The final selected players will participate in the DIBF World Deaf Basketball Championship in September 2011.

All players who receive an invitation to play on the USA team must be available to participate in the pre-World Deaf Basketball Championship games training camp(s), which may be announced later.

Should an athlete become injured, unavailable, or unable to work effectively with the team or the coaching staff members, s/he may be dropped from the program in compliance with the USADSF due process procedures. Furthermore, an athlete may be dropped from the USA National Team, if s/he should fail to comply with his/her fundraising responsibilities as required USADSF.
Should an athlete need to be replaced, selections will be made from the alternate pool previously identified at the trials.

Final rosters and any changes are subject to USADB and USADSF approval.

Selection Committee:
The Athlete Selection Committee will be composed of the USA Team Head Coach, assisted by a pool of coaches and other individuals recommended by USADB International Coordinator and approved by USADB Executive Board.

Due Process:
Any athlete who is displeased with his/her ranking or placement will first meet with the USA Basketball Team coaching staff. If the athlete is still displeased, s/he has the right to due process under the bylaws of USADB.
